Pomp and Circumstance - Decorating For The Graduation Party
The date has been set, the invitations are done, and the plan for a fabulous graduation party is in full swing. The next step in preparing for a successful event is determining the decor and adding a few special touches that will ensure that the party is memorable for everyone!Creating a fun and inviting atmosphere is simple to do with a few accessories. Adding a bouquet of balloons or flowers, hanging some streamers or even using fun and whimsical table decorations can change the atmosphere of a location quickly. A popular choice for decorations is the use of diplomas - rolled scrolls of paper tied with black or gold ribbon, or ribbon in the school colors. Also, mortarboard hats make great decor as well. These types of images can be found on virtually every possible item needed for a party: napkins, plates, banners, wall hangings, cups, invitations, table covers, serving pieces and even confetti.
If a more thematic approach is being used, go with appropriate decor for that theme. Creating centerpieces of sand buckets and shovels with a bit of playground sand and shells is perfect for a beach-themed party. Or, drape leis around beautiful plants for a luau. If the party is for a younger crowd, decorate according to the guest of honor’s interests. Keep decorations in check by not overcrowding the space with too much; going with a few tasteful items is much better than creating a sea of crepe paper and streamers (unless the theme is an ocean!).
Another idea to enhance the party decorations is to consult with the guest of honor on any personal items that might be included. Perhaps a collage of pictures of the graduate growing up or a collection of newspaper clippings of accomplishments might be well-received, as long as it does not embarrass the guest of honor. Scrapbooks and yearbooks are also nice to include as well.
Allow the guests in attendance to create a special memento of the event for the honoree. Provide a large poster for everyone to sign, or use a blank mat from a frame and let everyone write a message on it. This idea is wonderful if a group photo can be taken; the photo can then be placed in a frame with the personalize mat board surrounding it. Offer to have a small guest book for friends and relatives to write personal messages for the honoree, and present it at the end of the party. Leave room for photos from the party to be included.
If musical entertainment is in the plan for the party, be sure to book it well in advance. DJs and live music are great for college and even high school graduates. Younger children enjoy other types of entertainment, such as magicians, balloon-making clowns, bounce castles and other party-type entertainers. Check with the graduate to determine his or her interests in the matter. Hiring outside entertainment is not necessary, but if it is decided to include it, be sure it is done tastefully and within the budget.
