Bridal Shower - What To Serve

These days, guests are looking for something a little more than the simple cake-punch-nuts-mints combo at showers.  Why not throw in a few new ideas to entice the tastebuds?  Keep to the theme, or throw in a few favorites.  The key is to keep it simple and easy for the hostess.

Bacon Wrapped - ANYTHING!  Take small strips of bacon and wrap them around a variety of foods: mushrooms, apples, cream cheese-stuffed jalapenos, bell pepper are just a few.  Skewer with a toothpick.  Bake in the oven at 350 degrees until the bacon is cooked or cook them in a toaster oven.  Arrange on a pretty doily-lined platter and enjoy!

Fruit Salad a la “Melon Bowl” - Using a melon baller, scoop out the inside of a watermelon or other large melon (honeydew and canteloupe will work as well, but your bowl will be much smaller).  Add a variety of other balled melons and sliced fruits, such as strawberries, banana, mandarin oranges (the citrus will keep the bananas from turning), kiwi, cherries, apples, grapes and nuts.  Return the fruit salad into the shell of the melon for a pretty serving dish.

Fruit Tree - Similar to the bowl, slice and ball your fruits, and skewer them with toothpicks.  Using a foam cone (cover in foil to keep the styrofoam from flaking on the fruit), cover with the toothpicked fruit.  It makes a magnificent centerpiece!

Mini-Nachos - spread tortilla chips in a single layer on a cookie sheet.  Sprinkle with cheese and other desired toppings, such as black olives, artichokes, grilled peppers, and taco meat.  Bake in an oven until the cheese is melted.  Serve.

Mini-Muffins - sweet muffins, such as lemon poppyseed, blueberry or apple cinnamon are a great alternative to cake!  These are especially popular at brunches!  Provide a variety of flavored butters as well.

Tea Sandwiches - Using specialty breads, create sandwiches (such as chicken salad, tuna, ham and cheese, and pimento) that can be cut into bite-size pieces.  Arrange on a platter and serve.

Drinks - traditional punch can be served, or consider making alcoholic or non-alcoholic versions of mimosas, sangrias, and frozen delights such as margaritas, daquaris and other fruity fares.  Tea, coffee and drinks such as lemonades are also great to serve, especially in the warmer months.

Depending on the theme and guest list, other ideas might include: sushi, grilled seafood, tofu, or even pasta dishes.  There is no limit as to what can be served at a shower, as long as the bride loves it and the hostess doesn’t mind!
