Honoring The Retiree
It is a day to which so many look forward. Retirement day: no more 8 - 5, no more commutes, no more work responsibilities. More time for family, for home, for neighbors, for hobbies. And, many times, retirement day is a celebration. It can be something as simple as a lunch or dinner at a favorite restaurant, or it can be a full-blown gala event, complete with music, drinks and cake.
When planning a party for a retiree, look into incorporating a fun theme to boost the mood. Going with a tropical theme or a cruise theme (such as bon voyage!) is a great way to welcome in the calm seas of retirement. Using a sports theme can signify the “slam dunk” of a great career. Maybe the honoree has a passion for bowling and will be planning on spending hours at the lanes. Or, try a Casino Night party or a Poker Party for fun and games. Of course, using a standard “Happy Retirement” theme works just as well, too!
Plan on including family, friends and coworkers on the guest list. Family will appreciate being included in such a benchmark event in the loved one’s life, and coworkers will enjoy celebrating the career of a fellow employee. Double-check with the honoree to make sure everyone is included.
If so inclined, ask guests to participate in the party by either contributing to a speech or a roast or by writing a special note to the retiree that can be presented at the party. Gifts are not usually standard at a retirement party, so suggest to anyone that does inquire to consider making a charitable contribution in the honoree’s name. Special momentos are sometimes appreciated, though.
Whatever the theme, however large or small the group, paying tribute to a special person as they transition to a new part of their life can be a remarkable event.
