My birthday is during the summer and although I couldn’t change that if I wanted to, I wouldn’t have it any other way. The only theme that’s hard to pull off in sunny 80-degree weather is probably some sort of winter wonderland. Nevermind, you can pull that off indoors! I love, love, love birthdays. So when mine rolls around, I’m extra excited! Here are a few ideas for summer birthday events or more summer fun ideas for children (and let’s face it, adults too):
1. Ocean Themed Birthday – I know I’ve suggested this before for baby showers and other milestones, but look at these Jell-o Aquariums! I can almost not handle how cute they are!
2. Backyard Camping – I’m going real camping in a few weeks as part of my birthday month extravaganza, but when I was a kid, I used to plan camp nights in my backyard with my best friend. When I say backyard camping, I mean pitched tents, sleeping bags, lanterns (for a realistic touch), snacks (I cannot stress enough how important these are), a flashlight (how else will you tell scary stories?!), playing cards and a portable DVD player (this one is optional, I guess).
a. Backyard camping is so cool, it gets sub-tips: you will definitely need to work in a backyard bonfire. Use your imagination and s’mores NEED to be involved.
b. If this is a birthday theme, a “Trail Mix Bar” is also necessary. I love trail mix and what could be more fun for kids than filling up their own little snack bags?! Like I said before, snacks are super important and trail mix falls under that category.
3. Homemade Popsicles – the dollar store carries sets for making homemade popsicles. If you want to be thrifty, you can always use small popsicle sticks and an ice cube trays. These sets make them look like the real thing, though! Use your favorite fruit juices and for an added kick, add chunks of the fruit in the juice before freezing. Did I mention this also keeps the kids busy for at least 30-40 minutes?
Happy Birthday, summer babies and happy summer, kids on vacation!
