When you think of January, you think of fresh starts, new beginnings, parties, champagne, etc. It’s a busy month and it’s completely okay to overlook that January holidays are perhaps the oddest holidays. I picked five of these little-known January holidays to share because there is literally a wacky celebration to look forward to on each day of the month. Some of them have got to be made up, but we’ll roll with it for the sake of starting the year off with laughs and a lighthearted approach to 2014. By the way, what are some of your New Year’s resolutions this year? We’d love to hear the challenges you have set for yourselves this coming year.
- January 3: Fruitcake Toss Day — This rather obscure holiday was created to set an official day on which we all get rid of any fruitcake we may have received during the holiday season. Stop allowing it to take up storage space in your fridge. You and I both know you’re only keeping it around as a possible weapon in the event of any sudden violence in your household. I’m kidding. I’m serious about the holiday though. Some of my research even resulted in groups that make games out of throwing these rock hard desserts away. Fire away!
- January 10: Peculiar People Day — If you fancy yourself an odd-ball, extraordinary, regular amounts of ordinary or anything that might pop up under “different” if you were browsing through a Thesaurus than this is your day. This holiday was created to celebrate eccentricities of all types. Everyone is peculiar in their own way. In the words of John Lennon, “it’s weird not to be weird.” I’m not particularly sure who or when this holiday was created, but it’s a thing. Get into it.
- January 17: Ditch New Years Resolution Day — This apparently is a real holiday and your chance to ditch those resolutions you made with so much conviction at the beginning of the year. You gave yourself a good two weeks to try out that new lifestyle and by about this time, it’s really feeling like more of a hardship than a challenge. Enter January 17, your day to celebrate how you’re no longer going to follow through with promises you’ve made to yourself. Hey, who are we to discourage you?
- January 20: Penguin Awareness Day — Penguin Awareness Day is, you guessed it, the day allotted to sitting around learning more about these fancy creatures. Fun fact: these Antarctica natives mate for life. In other words, they have a lot to teach us about unconditional love.
- January 24: Beer Can Appreciation Day - Although you might think this is the day that has been designated for all to sit around contemplating beer can art, it’s not. It truly is the first fateful day on which beer was sold in the can. Enjoy a can or two to celebrate the milestone?
Go forth and create your own random holidays. Perhaps one day your holiday will be celebrated worldwide. In the meantime, browse our Theme Party Supplies for decorations and tableware for almost any occasion!
