Remember Hawaii

Hawaii holds a special place in the lives of many.  Perhaps it was a dream vacation.  Or, maybe it was the honeymoon.  It could have been an opportunity to study or just a place to get away.  Hawaii is a unique and beautiful cluster of islands, and those that have experienced it will long for more.  Celebrating special times in a Hawaiian theme is the perfect way to remember those special days.

Hawaiian themed parties are perfect for anniversaries, birthdays, dances, and even group get-togethers.  Using invitations that fit the theme is essential; for a mixed-group party, a generic beach or tropical design would be perfect.  If the attendees are more of an all-girls’ gathering, some cute Hula-style invitations might be more appropriate.  Floral or tropical invitations can even be quite appropriate for an all-guys’ event.

Of course, to create the right atmosphere, the right partyware is needed.  Choose a design that matches or complements the invitations.  Nothing says “Aloha!” like the right design on plates, cups and napkins!  Providing classic “coconut” drinkware is especially fun.  Spice up your tables and serving areas with brightly colored print tablecloths or solid colored table covers, and sprinkle cute Hawaiian Luau confetti over the table.  Look for dimensional decorations, such as stand up cutouts and centerpieces to liven up tables, such as a tiki hut or a parrothead.  Draw your guests’ eyes up by stringing festive garland throughout the area, and hang cute decorations from above for a fun look.  Give the place an extra punch by investing in some suspended tropical trees to really put everyone in the mood!

To fully enjoy the Hawaiian mood, provide simple costume pieces for the guests.  Grass skirts, leis, necklaces, and other items are perfect for party-wear and are easily adjusted for each guests’ taste and size.  Offer the guests a themed temporary tattoo, or how about a floral hair band for the girls?

Serving up theme-appropriate food is also a great idea.  Fresh fruit, pork, fish, coconut-accented foods, and tropical drinks are all good choices.  If the event is during the warmer months, chilled or frozen fruit drinks are always a hit.  Seafood on a bed of rice is always a hit.  For younger children, create a cake decorated in a beach theme, or make a round cake into a coconut or even a beach ball.

Offer some fun tropical tunes for background music.  Groups such as the Beach Boys are always fun to play during a party, or find more authentic hula music to play.  Music that contains ukuleles and bongos almost always hints at a tropical feel.  Music is just one more tool to setting the overall mood of the party.

Whatever the reason for a Hawaiian party, the more planning and effort that is put into it will result in a better experience for everyone.  When each element of the party is tied in with the rest by coordinating the menu, the decor and the atmosphere, guests will not be able to help but feel like they are stepping foot onto a tropical paradise.
