Shamrock Treats!

St. Patrick’s Day is around the corner. Although I hate being pinched and no, I am not Irish, this day is so much fun.If you find your inner self screaming, “Where is me-snack?!” then I strongly suggest engaging in the art of “Shamrock Yummies”:

English Muffin
Cheddar Cheese
Green Pepper

  1. Slice the green pepper crosswise near the top to get a shamrock-shaped slice (they usually turn out with 3 points)
  2. Cut a small slice off the end to create a stem
  3. Broil cheddar cheese on the English muffin and top it off with the shamrock!
  4. Enjoy your gold-en treats after setting them on foil shamrock shaped doilies!

Holiday Cookie Swap

Baking can prove to be a rather relaxing activity, especially amidst the stress and chaos of the holiday. Not only does baking have a therapeutic effect, but it can also be a great activity to keep the little ones busy or a great opportunity to bond with friends and relatives. Recently, some individuals have taken to having cookie swap parties where each guest brings his/her own special recipes so that a variety of treats can be produced.

After the treats are done baking, each guest decorates and wraps his/her desserts in festive wrapping, such as cello bags or treat boxes. The different packages can all be laid out and guests can walk around swapping cookies and treats.

This occasion serves as a time to catch up with old friends and family and everyone walks away with a nice assortment of holiday desserts.Yum!

November, Peanut Butter Lovers Month!

We are almost exactly one week away from November, which is Peanut Butter Lovers Month! Although it may not be a widely known “celebration,” it is a fun opportunity to get together with the children and put together a few activities. Baking and cooking are always great hands-on projects.

A fun idea to honor Peanut Butter Lovers Month is to make home-made peanut butter. Whether you’re setting up for a few of your children or siblings, or a whole class, I would definitely suggest grabbing some plastic or paper table covers and disposable bowls. Distribute the plastic bowls among your students, and get ready to have some fun!

  1. Mix the peanuts with the peanut oil and pour into the food processor.
  2. Process the blend until it’s very smooth.
  3. Store your smooth peanut butter in a sealed container in the fridge. It will be good for 2 weeks.

Monday Night Gossip

Only recently have “girl’s nights” become more & more prevalent, as opposed to “guy’s nights,” which used to be every night. What is with that crazy double standard following us all the way into the 21st Century, anyway?!

Regardless of the facts, it’s time to even the score, & do it while being conscious of the times. Most of us girls revel in those scarce evenings of juicy gossip, fruity drinks & appetizers—evenings that sometimes turn into unplanned sleepovers. While we love spending time with our significant others, we absolutely need our girls to share all those “unbelievable” things they do as well as relieving some of that pent up cattiness.

Yes, club nights are awesome & far too much fun, but nights in are so enjoyable. I love Monday nights! After a long day at work, I can relax & cozy on up to bed with my favorite TV show, Gossip Girl. My best friend & I adore cooking something yummy before this televised drama/gossip-packed little gem begins (you can always hit the pause button, too!). Although this little tradition my friend & I have going on is between the two of us, it would be fun to enjoy a TV Dinner Party with a couple other girlfriends.

We may not have maids like our favorite television stars, but we have two hands & what better way to catch up with old friends, than cooking up some appetizers? I found this recipe in Marie Claire & my friend & sisters absolutely loved it:

Shrimp Lollipops (serves 4)

24 shrimp, deveined and butterflied

1 Inch gingers

2 cloves garlic

1 scallion, green party only

1 small bunch of cilantro

¼ cup canola oil, plus extra for cooking

Salt & Peppers

8 skewers

Grapefruit Segments and Boston lettuce for garnish

Serve on appropriate tableware, such as our new square paper plates! Get that sophisticated look for less.

Don’t feel guilty setting a night a week aside for you and your closest confidantes—guys have there sport nights, why can’t we categorize gossip as a sport?

That Good Apple Dip

I recently attended two rather large gatherings, both of which required a dish to be brought to share.  I took this very simple, yet extremely divine, goody on both occasions, and I was met with rave reviews.  This is great for a child’s party all the way to an extravagant affair.  When you need an easy, throw-together plan for something sweet and still a bit healthy, consider creating That Good Apple Dip.
